Expatpreneur Awards 2019: How Pay-It-Forward Award Winner Charlie Scott Is Making A HUGE Difference

"Our vision is to raise the standards of the entire moving industry," says this co-founder of SIR Move Services.

The Finder’s annual “Pay-it-Forward Award” is given to a business that has “done the most to benefit a worthy cause or causes through its pro bono services, community outreach, charitable contributions and/or other good works.”

We are proud to say that many of this year’s Expatpreneur Award winners give back to society and do their part to take care of the environment.

But, Scottish expat Charlie, who co-founded SIR Move Services with Shyla Mathews more than a dozen years ago, has been helping vulnerable children in need via the company’s SIR Make a Difference initiative for longer than the rest, and with significant logistical output.

Since 2009, the company has organised an annual donation drive – 10 in total, so far – to gather necessities and niceties for orphanages in Cambodia and Sri Lanka. “The orphanages make a wish list of items they need, such as head lice shampoo, toothpaste, even pingpong tables,” explains Charlie. Then, after receiving enough donations, SIR Make a Difference enlists volunteers to sort through the items and help pack them into one 40-foot container per year, which is shipped to the orphanage. “It’s great, because Shyla and I have gone there when the containers have arrived, and saw the kids – it’s like Christmas!”

Having lived here for 36 years, Charlie has a wealth of knowledge to offer newcomers, and SIR Move has previously published its own “charity” book, My First 7 Days in Singapore, which it distributes for free to recently arrived clients.

Beyond that, he and Shyla are committed to the future of their business and their dedicated team. “Our vision is to raise the standards of the entire moving industry by educating the packers – giving them a certification, after six weeks’ or six months’ training,” he says of SIR Move’s latest programme, RISE. What inspired the name? Charlie explains: “It is ‘SIR’ backwards with an ‘E’ for education at the end.”
