Founded in 2011, NEXUS International School (Singapore) opened a brand new campus in Aljunied in January 2020.
As a school that understands that no two children learn the same way, NEXUS prides itself on teaching its students in an innovative and engaging way. The school has cemented itself as a leading educator, and is an accredited member of the Council of International Schools and a recipient of the exclusive Apple Distinguished School (ADS) status. Its new school campus is based on an “open classroom” concept designed by its teachers. This unique building is aimed at fostering collaborative spaces and enhancing creativity, and features excellent learning, play and sports facilities for its children to take charge of their learning and learn in a way that suits them best.
NEXUS follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) for children from Nursery to Year 6. Students in Years 7 to 9 follow the English National Curriculum and Years 10 and 11 follow the Cambridge IGCSE. Students in Years 12 and 13 follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), recognised by universities across the globe.
3 Fast Facts:
1. Learning Through Play
At its new Aljunied campus, NEXUS has devoted play spaces for its little ones from Nursery level to Year 6. In its Early Childhood programme, playtime entails numerous activities involving sensory bins, water-play, dress up racks, reading nooks and mini-furniture.
The high adult-to-child ratio (1:6) in Early Childhood ensures that little ones receive all the guidance and encouragement they need in their learning. This is particularly important because NEXUS emphasises early reading skills, aiming to guide children to become confident and fluent readers.
2. Nurturing Leaders
NEXUS encourages kids to take charge of their learning. This allows students to develop confidence and creativity at an early age, along with essential skills for adulthood. Older students may also lead their own extracurricular activities as part of their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) requirement in the IB Diploma Programme. Many school initiatives are organised by student leaders, such as student fundraising or raising awareness for charities like Hair for Hope and Soles4Souls. Other leadership opportunities for students include Primary Students Taking Action, Lead Learners (similar to student councils) and Eco Committees.
Simultaneously, NEXUS’ driven and well-educated teachers focus on preparing students to be the leaders of the future – 35 percent of teachers at NEXUS hold masters degrees and more.
3. Adventure at its Core
With more than 90 extracurricular activities to choose from, kids can engage in a huge variety of options – from art to sports and theatre. Aside from traditional activities like Model United Nations (MUN), choir and sports, NEXUS also offers unique and imaginative opportunities like Dungeons and Dragons, LEGO robotics and even Irish Dancing.
If on-campus activities are not enough to entice your kids, NEXUS expands their horizons by organising school trips starting from Year 3 all the way to Year 12. Students can explore islands and cities across Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. While these overseas trips have stopped temporarily because of Covid-19, the school will be looking to resume them when restrictions are lifted and travelling abroad is allowed.
“The enquiry-based learning at NEXUS has been wonderful for Ruby. Over the last half a decade with NEXUS, she has learnt skills that will not only help her in the classroom, but in life too. We love that the school’s teachers and staff are accessible and that we are constantly kept up to date with what’s going on in school, which is especially important for parents now, as we are not allowed on campus due to Covid restrictions. Lastly, we love the NEXUS community! From our first contact with the friendly Admissions team to all the friends we have made, there is a strong sense of community and support that makes the whole experience of international schooling feel more personal.”
– Jeanette Elliott, parent of Ruby, 10
