5 Tips to Improve Productivity at Work

Our modern society is constantly begging us to get more done in less time. It can make you feel a bit crazy at times. We’ve got some tips from a savvy and successful business woman and she’s letting us share her secrets! Michaela Anchan, the 35-year-old head honcho of Woolf Works, Singapore’s first women-only co-working space, shares five tips on how you can improve your productivity at work.

1. Minimise Distractions

“I was a stay-at-home mum for five years, and while I kept thinking up great business ideas, they never really got off the ground as I was frustrated and distracted most of the time – by everything from Facebook notifications to parenting duties. This was what actually inspired me to start Woolf Works. Creating a conducive working environment for yourself is essential, so turn off your social media notifications and find a quiet space where you can fully concentrate on your tasks.”

2. Dive Straight into Work
“Tackle the biggest thing on your to-do list first thing in the morning. It’ll make you feel very accomplished, and it will set the tone for the rest of the day.”

3. Set Achievable Time Goals
“Give yourself a chunk of time – say an hour – to achieve three tasks. Once the hour is up, allow yourself a trip to the coffee machine, a quick browse on Instagram or a chat with a co-worker. After 10 minutes, immerse yourself in work again. I find this time-focused style of working really effective.”

4. Allocate Your Time Wisely
“Think about when you are least productive and use that time for other tasks. I try to avoid scheduling external meetings between 9am and 11am, as that’s when I am most productive at my desk. I prefer being out and about and chatting with people in the afternoons instead.”

5. Reward Yourself
“Many people underestimate the benefits of self-care. I set aside a half-day once a month and pamper myself with treats like a manicure, pedicure or facial. I then work hard for the rest of the month, knowing that I have something to look forward to.”
