Are You Wearing the Right Size Sports Bra?

A great way to get motivated to excercise is to buy some new gear. So you head to the store, buy a great new sports bra and head down East Coast Park. Moments later, disappointment sets it as you realize your bra doesn’t fit right. Your motivation plummets. Before you head to Starbuck’s to drown your fitness goals in a Frappicino, read these 4 tips so you never find yourself in an ill-fitting sports bra again.


1. Consider your cup size and level of activity

Most sports bras are categorised according to the types of activities they are manufactured for (low-, medium- or high-impact). However, when you’re choosing a sports bra, it’s important to consider both your regular bra size and the activity you will most often be engaged in.

For example, if you have a larger cup size (C and above), it’s best to go for a higher-support bra, even if you’re doing a lower-impact activity like yoga. When in doubt, always go for a higher-support bra for a lower-impact activity, and never the other way round.


2. Try on a range before deciding

Your regular bra size doesn’t always translate into your perfect sports bra size, so you need to try on a range of sports bras. As a rule of thumb, you know you’ve found the one when it fits you like a glove but is not so tight that you find it hard to breathe. It should also feel very comfortable through a range of movements, and neither ride up nor be constricting.


3. Perform a range of movements when trying one on

  • Bend over to make sure that you’re not spilling out of it. If you are, go one cup size up (for bras that go by cup sizing) or one size up (for bras that go by small, medium and large sizings).
  • Stretch your arms overhead to check if the band of the bra rides up your chest. If it does, it’s too big for you. On the flip side, if your breasts or the flesh on your back spill out over the sides of the bra near your underarms, the band is too small for you.
  • Do a simple side-to-side rotation. If the band moves as you turn to the side, it’s too big. Conversely, if your breasts or back spill out over the sides near the underarms, the band is too small.
  • Do a series of jumps. If there’s significant bounce when you jump, the cup size is too big. On the other hand, if the tops of the cups are squeezing your breasts, it’s an indication that the cup size is too small.


4. Get fitted regularly by an expert

This is especially important if your body has gone through or is going through significant change – for example, if you’ve just given birth or are on a fitness plan to lose weight. In these situations, it’s best to get fitted every six months or so to make sure your sports bra size has not changed drastically.
