If you really want to go green, a great place to start is your kitchen! After all, it is the heart of the home.
Feel good about your carbon footprint using these four tips.
1. Cut food waste
Singapore throws away almost one million tonnes of food every year. This excessive amount of food waste is a major burden on our planet. From production to transportation and disposal – it drains our resources at every level. Start planning your meals and buying only what you need to help you eat better and minimize your environmental impact.
2. Reduce usage of plastic bags
Singapore uses a staggering three billion plastic bags every year! Bring that number down by reducing the unnecessary use of plastic bags. Take reusable bags along every time you go grocery shopping. You’ll feel good the next time you say: I don’t need plastic bags, thanks!
3. Go local
Stock your pantry with Made in Singapore food and support our local producers. Check out these delicious and eco-responsible local brands:
- Chilli sauce: Mofo Chili
- Fruit jam: GSH Conserves
- Peanut butter: The Hunter’s Kitchenette
- Granola: Eastern Granola, Almost Perfect Granola
- Healthy snacks: Superlative Foods
- Locally grown veggies: Green Circle, Quang Fa
4. Use natural cleaning products
Never spray chemical cleaners near your food. Chemicals do not biodegrade easily – they may end up on your plates, food and, eventually, body. Go natural and look for cleaning products that are labelled biodegradable and non-toxic.
If you use antibacterial soap, scientists are now urging you to stop. Chemicals found in these products – such as Triclosan – create resistant, mutated bacteria that are more likely to survive. There is actually no need to use harsh chemicals for cleaning. In fact, plain soap and water have been shown to be equally effective at eliminating bacteria without negative side effects. Keep it safe and stick to simple hygiene practices.
Try Making Your Own Cleaner:
Make this simple and effective all-purpose cleaner and use it to wipe down your counters and the inside of your fridge.
- 2 cups of water
- 1 cup of white distilled vinegar
- 10 drops of essential oil, such as lemon or lavender (optional)
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Use as you would any conventional all-purpose cleaner.
