Do I Have To Pay For My Domestic Helper’s Medical Bills In Singapore?

To what extent should an employer pay for the helper’s medical bills? Singapore maid agency 121 Personnel has the answer.

Your legal obligations

When you employ a helper, you are required by law to purchase medical insurance of at least $15,000 per year as well as Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) with a minimum sum of $40,000, with compensation payable to the helper or her beneficiaries.

You also must bear the cost of medical expenses not covered by the insurance or PAI.

Meaning what, exactly? You are obligated to pay for any medical treatments – inpatient or outpatient – deemed necessary by a medical or dental professional.

However, if the treatment is not medically necessary, you are not liable to pay for it.

“My helper’s been hospitalised!”

The employer is legally required to bear the cost of the treatment until the helper is well enough to travel back to her home country for further treatment.

Expenses incurred for her treatment back in her home country will be borne by the helper herself but you must still bear the cost of repatriation.

Failing to fulfil your medical obligations may result in a fine of up to $10,000 and/or a jail term of up to 12 months.

How to avoid medical mishaps

Ask your helper to attend a comprehensive medical check-up prior to hiring her. You will need to pay for it, but it will give you both more peace of mind in the long run.
