The next time you decide to ride an exercise bike at the gym, think twice. We’re not asking you to swear off exercise, but a recent finding by FitRated.com gave us goose bumps.
They collected bacteria samples from 27 equipment at three gyms to show their readers how much icky stuff you’re in contact with every time you hit the gym, and the results were shocking.
They found that an exercise bike had, on average, 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat! The treadmill has slightly more bacteria than the exercise bike, but we’re less worried about that because you certainly don’t place your butt and hands on the treadmill (you only do the latter when you’re adjusting the speed).
Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to start limiting your fitness options to jogs in the park. You can still head to your favourite gym but before you ride that bike, why not start burning calories by first giving that machine a good wipe-down?
