Fab Abs in Just 3 Steps!

The key to a strong core? Doing a variety of exercises for your abs. Mix things up with these moves with Singapore’s women-only gym, Amore Fitness.

“Switching things up stimulates your muscles and triggers their growth,” says Alfa January Young Cabang, personal trainer at Amore Fitness. So take a break from sit-ups and try the exercises shown below. “Unlike crunches, which only work the muscles closest to the skin surface, these work your transverse abdominal muscles (the deepest of all your abs) which is your body’s natural corset,” advises Alfa.

Do these workouts two or three times a week, together with cardio and strength training, to get washboard abs.

The Mountain Climber

  1. Get into plank position, keeping your back straight and tightening your core (draw your belly button towards your spine).

  1. Move your right knee diagonally towards your left elbow. The twisting motion works your obliques (the sides of your abs), while pulling your leg towards your chest works your upper and lower abdominal muscles.

  1. Repeat with the other leg. Do it non-stop for 45 seconds (one set) and repeat for three sets.

The Push-Plank

  1. Get into plank position, keeping your back straight and tightening your core.
  2. Place your left forearm down on the ground, followed by your right forearm, while keeping your body in plank position – this requires you to engage your core muscles for stability.
  3. Get yourself back into starting position by straightening your left arm and then your right. Do three sets of 20 repetitions.

The Plank with Hip Extension

  1. Get into plank position, keeping your back straight and tightening your core.

  1. Place your right knee on the ground. Lift your left leg so that it’s aligned with your back and extend your right arm straight in front of you. You should feel the stretch in your abdominal muscles.

  1. Hold for a few seconds, then return to starting position. Repeat with the other leg. Do three sets of 15 repetitions for each leg.
