Haji Lane: Things To Do + Where To Eat, Drink And Shop

Haji Lane is the one-stop destination for anything hip and indie, from boutique shops to chic cafes and even a bustling nightlife.

This cult favourite indie street is home to the iconic colourful street art you’ll see on every corner. Haji Lane is also home to local quirky boutique shops that sell anything from clothing, jewellery, perfumes and other knick knacks. Not to mention, the food haven that surrounds the alley ways. And did you know Haji Lane was named one of the coolest streets in the world?

Haji Lane is situated in the Kampong Glam area, known as the Muslim cultural hub of Singapore. Nearby you’ll find the infamous Arab Street for great Middle Eastern and Mediterranean shops and restaurants. Check out what there is to do in this little indie haven of Kampong Glam, Haji Lane.

1. Take pictures with iconic street art

Wall after wall, you’ll find crazy street art designs full of every colour. These artwork add the vibrancy and quirkiness that is so iconic to Haji Lane. One of the most famous art murals is the one pictured above done by Mexican restaurant, Piedra Negra, and artist Didier Jaba Mathieu. It depicts Aztec, the indigenous people dominant in Mexico before Spanish colonisation in the 16th century. Take out your cameras and snap away!

2. The Nail Social

Pamper yourself with a self-care day at this cozy nail salon. You can get a manicure, pedicure, and foot massages accompanied by drinks and snacks. Step up this spa experience with a personal iPad given to you where you can watch movies, play games, listen to podcasts or read books. Who doesn’t want to be surrounded by little feline friends? Cozy up to the lovely cats at Meomi Cat Cafe, and, if you’re lucky, you might even get to feed them treats during feeding time. The space is cozy and comfortable, with low cushioned seating that’s perfect for cat cuddling. If you’re bringing children under 12 years old (a minimum age of 6 is allowed to enter), they must be accompanied by an adult.

1. Blue Jaz Cafe

Weekends are never blue at this hip bar during its pre-Covid days, attracting jazz lovers with great live music. Weekdays, too, are eventful with occasional slam poetry or stand-up comedy. But the show goes on in this soulful joint, with amazing food and drinks to spend the evening surrounded by the colourful street art. Enjoy a range of international foods like North Indian plates assorted Pakora ($9.90) or local delights like Sambal Fried Rice ($10.90). Cocktails and, yes, flaming cocktails go from $8 to $12, whilst beers are $7, and wines go from $18.

This festive and buzzing Mexican joint is amongst Haji Lane’s favourite gems. Indulge in delicious Mexican cuisine and great cocktails to soak up the vibe. Start off with crispy tortilla chips with freshly house made guacamole ($10.90), along with a hearty burrito (from $13.90). Don’t forget a lovely frozen or shaken margarita ($15), or get a jug to share with a friend ($60) to make the night last.

3. Limaa

This Instagram-worthy cafe, with its boho-chic decor, is Muslim-owned and offers delicious and wholesome meals. Limaa began with two women in 2017, Aidah and Zakiah, on a mission to offer healthy meals around the Kampong Glam area. From freshly pressed juices with no added sugar to hearty meals like Rosti with Pulled Beef ($9), you’ll be satisfied without feeling heavy.

4. The Mad Sailors

Craving classic British grub? The Mad Sailors offers your British comfort food favourites as well as fun and creative flavours in the mix. The storefront is hard to miss with its rainbow art mural and nautical themed interior, yet another picture-worthy opportunity. For brunch weekends, get a load of the English Fry Up ($23), complete with sausage, beans, a sunny-side up with veggies and potatoes. For the mains, there’s British classics like Fish & Chips ($25.90), or go for something from the sea such as the Grilled Whole Barramundi ($31.20).

5. I am…

Inspired by the ever so famous ‘I am’ sign in Amsterdam, this street side cafe serves heart warming Dutch inspired dishes. Plus, it is Halal-certified! Check out the signature dish, Bitterballen ($10.90), which are fried Dutch meatballs stuffed with juicy veal or ragout. On the side, go for the Fries & Mayo ($7.90), a Dutch favourite. 6. Good Luck Beerhouse

A trip to Haji Lane isn’t complete without some fresh beverages. You’ll feel extra cool just drinking at this craft beer and dim sum bar with over 16 taps. Committed to the local community, Good Luck Beerhouse ensures at least half of the taps are exclusive to Singapore craft beers. Enjoy your beers with delicious local dishes like the Signature Char Kway Teow ($15), or opt for the Dim Sum bundle ($21.50). Even the pickiest of beer drinkers will find something they’ll love.

7. Going Om

Try out a cuisine you’ve probably never came across in Singapore: Nepalese cuisine. This hip cafe and bar is inspired by the spirit of the Himalaya mountains, aiming to create a harmonious sanctuary tucked away amongst the eclectic street of Haji Lane. Start with the popular Pani Puri, freshly mashed potatoes in kueh pie tee cups with bursts of flavour coming from the coriander, mint and tamarind juice. Also, check out the fun and colourful cocktails, namely Angel Drinks from $20. You definitely don’t want to miss this hidden gem.

8. Blanco Court Prawn Mee

If you’re a big fan of prawn mee, Blanco Court on Beach Road cannot be missed. Choose between bee hoon, yellow noodles or kway teow for a mouth-watering bowl that comes with pork lard, fried shallots, and, the stars of the show, fresh prawns. Add some chilli padi to your Signature Jumbo Prawn Mee ($15.80) for extra heat. The rich and fragrant prawn stock is what draws lovers of prawn mee back to Blanco Court every time.

9. Windowsill Pies

You’re in for a treat at Windowsill Pies with their legendary range of delicious pies. From Classic Pecan Pie ($65 for whole pie, $7.30 for a slice), or zesty Strawberry Lemon Meringue Pie, to decadent S’mores Pie ($67 for whole pie, $7.80 for a slice), you’ll be spoilt for choice. Can’t make a decision? Go for the Assorted Pies, where you can get 10 slices for $67. Pop in for a slice and enjoy the quaint interior with the smells of freshly baked pies wafting around the store. SSFW (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) founder, Hazel, started the business back in 2007 before opening her own store in 2010. SSFW is now the quintessential Haji Lane store, selling unique and dainty locally crafted jewellery. From everyday pieces and minimalist designs, to colourful gem stones and even mask straps, there is something for everyone. Not only are the jewellery great quality, but with reasonable prices too.
