Here’s How To Try Out The POUND Workout, Singapore’s Latest Fitness Craze, For Yourself!

Get on down to POUND TOWN and let Grace Sagaya, Singapore’s only “POUND PRO”, lead you to the promised land!

What is POUND?  It’s the new group exercise phenomena that has taken the US and Australia by storm. 2 hot and hip female US drummers created POUND because they were bored of the ‘same old same old’ and felt that some of the techniques and distraction that drumming could provide, would make for a fun and intense work out.

Intense is correct – your squat technique needs to be on game as you do about ‘a thousand of them’ (exaggerating – but close!!)  throughout the 45 minute class. 

Added to this, the taller you are, the deeper that squat needs to be so that you maintain safe form of a straight back as you tap your ‘Ripstix’ side to side or belt them out in front.

How has it arrived under the radar here in Singapore so swiftly? Grace Sagaya, a local Zumba instructor and studio owner, was holidaying in Melbourne, Australia, and took the opportunity to attend a couple of classes. She was instantly hooked and tracked down the next instructors course…..IN FRANCE! Now that’s commitment right?

Grace is a total fire ball, armed with her stack of fluro green rip stix she is ready to lead you all to ‘Pound Town’! And her singlet proudly says ‘Pound Pro’ – someone has a wicked sense of humour at Pound HQ!

I was fortunate enough to secure a few media positions at the launch last month so I dragged my super inquisitive fitspo buddies along with me.

The verdict?  100% you get a work out – legs, butt, thighs, core plus non stop cardio is the checklist of best benefits. 

The distraction of the drumming plus the carefully selected rocking playlist makes the class fly by in record time as you transport yourself to Wembly Stadium and turn that dream of becoming a rock god in to a reality! Jokes aside, the fantasy aspect of really letting go and giving it all that you’ve got created an electric ambiance during our session – so much fun!

All levels of fitness were represented at our class and because you remain stationary for most of the time, going at your own pace is very achievable.

It’s ok if a few of those stix didn’t actually make contact with the ground from time to time – they will as you get hooked and make it a weekly thing, deepening that lunge!

A warning though: keep mindful of your form and technique!  A couple of my tribe complained of sore backs the next day. As the class goes on, you can fatigue and start hunching. Don’ – you will pay for it. 

Would I go back? I love variety and I’m a group X junkie – I NEED community to motivate me for my sweat sessions – so yes for sure I would return. 

Is it going to replace my beloved Zumba?  Not just yet – but for those less co-ordinated who would LOVE to attend Zumba but are a little intimidated by the steps – POUND is for you. Simple choreo but high energy and definitely the same high octane fun to similar tunes!
