If You Can Ace This Trivia About Britain, You Could Probably Win A British Pub Quiz

Think you know your Britain well?

Test your knowledge with this mini trivia.

(Psst! If you get these right, you need to take part in the Best Of British 2016’s Superbrains Quiz Night!)

1. How many tube stations are there in the London Underground?

source

There are 270 stations in total, across 11 lines.

It’s ittle wonder the tube travels a whopping 43 million miles every 12 months – thats almost halfway to the sun!

2. Name the only town in England which has a name ending with an exclamation mark.

source

Beautiful, innit?

That’s Westward Ho!, a seaside village near Bideford in Devon, England.

Known for its unusual name (and its lush beaches, of course), the city was named after a 1855 novel by Charles Kingsley, which was set in nearby Bideford.

3. The English Romantic poet William Wordsworth described which village as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”?

source

Grasmere: a village, and popular tourist destination, in the centre of the English Lake District.

It’s also the very place where Wordsworth himself lived for 14 years of his life. The unspoilt beauty of Grasmere was the inspiration behind a fair amount of his poetic works.

4. True or false: the chocolate bar was invented in England.

True!

In 1847, Joseph Fry found a way to mix the ingredients of cocoa powder, sugar and cocoa to manufacture a paste that could then be molded into a chocolate bar proper for consumption, rather than just for making desserts or beverages.

All of this magic happened in his chocolate factory in Bristol, and that’s why we have our chocolate bars today.

5. By population, which is England’s smallest ceremonial county?

source

Surprise! It’s the City of London, with a population of only 7,000 (as of 2011).

The City of London is, however, home to countless commercial buildings (the city vies with New York City as the financial capital of the world), a great many churches, and historic buildings such as Mansion House.
