Drinks, delivered! Check out these homegrown distilleries and #SupportLocal
Whether it’s beer, spirits or other types of alcohol – sharing a drink is a great way to bond, have fun, spend quality time with one another or relax and connect with yourself. Ever more so than ever, it’s high time we reward ourselves and stay connected with others. But of course, everything in moderation, right?
If you’re thinking that Singapore’s alcohol and spirits scene is boring, maybe you’re wrong. Check out these made-in-Singapore spirits for your next long night. All of the distilleries here offer home delivery too. Or you can purchase bottles at selected stockists around the island. Visit their sites for details.
Established in 2019 by Simon Zhao and Vegneswaran Ram — Simon was behind Rachelle the Rabbit Meadery — this distillery combines both traditional techniques and innovative ideas. All of Compendium’s base fermentable are sourced from around Asia and are fermented in-house. Featuring flavours inspired by Asian heritage, the spirits pay homage to Singapore in a bottle. Choose from Rojak and Chendol Gin (from $25), Kopi-O Liqueur (from $15) and Melaka Arrack (from $21).
Available at Compendium.
2. The Orientalist Spirits
Not a gin fan? The Orientalist Spirits carries alcohol like vodka and whisky, too. The Orientalist Origins Vodka ($118), for instance, includes flavours from Southeast Asia’s longan honey to Tibetan barley, and potatoes. It’s then distilled with Japanese spring water, resulting in a never-before-done spirit. Tip: Get The Orientalist Spirits three-pack for $298, and drink your way through the flavours of several Asian countries. Hey, you can’t travel anyway right now!
Available at The Orientalist Spirits.
3. Tanglin Gin
Fun fact: Tanglin Gin is Singapore’s first gin distillery, founded in June 2018 by Andy Hodgson, Tim Whitefield, Charlie van Eeden and Chris Box. The fins are inspired by all things Singapore, from its history to botanical flavours. Take the Singapore Gin ($98), which blends flavours like kaffir lime, ginger, orange peel and dried chilli seed — and leaves the perfect tingle on your tongue.
Available at Tanglin Gin.
4. Brass Lion Distillery
Brass Lion Distillery’s founder Jamie Koh went on a six-year journey to master the art of distillation. So it’s not surprising that her distillery ensures high quality by using entirely natural ingredients — even cracking and peeling all botanicals by hand! The brand’s multi award-winning Singapore Dry Gin ($88) combines classic flavours like ginger and lemongrass, with a nose of subtle pine from juniper berries.
Available at Brass Lion Distillery.
5. Singapore Distillery
Singapore Distillery celebrates the herbs and spices of Southeast Asia, and reflects the melting pot of cultures that defines this city-state. Looking to make the perfect Singapore Sling? Consider the brand’s Singapore Sling Gin ($64.90). The orange, cherry, angelica, pineapple and lime that make up the iconic drink is combined in one bottle. A must-try: the five-time distilled Merlion Vodka ($54.90) with an extra-smooth feel.
Available at Singapore Distillery.
6. Lion City Meadery
While Lion City Meadery may not specialise in spirits, its locally brewed mead is worth a mention. Started in August 2018 by Sanjay Jegatheesan and justin Herson, it was voted the 2nd Best Local Brewery or Distillery by SG Magazine in 2020. No doubt, that’s because of its uniquely flavoured beverages such as the Spiced Mead (online prices start from $11) or its Liang-teh Seasonal Series, with versions that cover chrysanthemum, as well as longan and red dates.
Available at Lion City Meadery.
