As Singapore’s first zero-waste grocery store, UnPackt has revolutionised how people living here can take small steps to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Since 2018, Unpackt’s unique model has encouraged shoppers to shop “package-free without adding to the current pollution situation”, explains co-founder Florence Tay.
Shopping package-free may seem complicated, but UnPackt encourages its customers to bring their own containers from home. Not only is this practical, but it helps reduce packing waste generated from typical supermarket shopping. Florence adds, “In the event they run out of containers to use, we have free reusable ones in stores, too!”
Since starting Unpackt, she has managed to convince her neighbours to shop package-free as well. Also, she’s seen students return to the store with their parents after learning about UnPackt and going zero-waste in their educational learning journeys. “This keeps us motivated to drive more awareness to our cause in Singapore,” she says.
