Singapore’s Secret Places To Eat, Drink, and Play – By Singaporean Melissa Ng

Home is where the heart is

The founder of Melewi – The Traveling Design Studio, Melissa Ng has lived in Vietnam, Sydney, and Melbourne, and stayed for a few months in Japan. She has been featured on Nomadlist and Channel NewsAsia for her work and travels.

Originally from Singapore, she shares her favourite finds in her home country.

For delicious local food

For Singapore’s renown favourite dish, Melissa highly recommends Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice.

“Chicken rice is the bomb,” she muses. “This is one of the best places I’ve found that has incredibly tender and tasty chicken.”

She also loves the food at Omar Shariff.

“Amazing Indian food, incredibly fast delivery (thank you Deliveroo!) – I’ve been a loyal customer for years!”

For great coffee

Melissa swears by Ronin and Grounded by Common Man Coffee Roasters for her coffee fixes.

Grounded by Common Man Coffee Roasters is attached to Yoga Movement’s new studio at Robertson Quay, and although she’s not a yoga person, she enjoys their “incredibly tasty yet super healthy food”.

As for Ronin, she declares that the coffee there is easily the best she’s had in Singapore!

Her home style

Melissa likes to keep her abode “simple, classic but modern”.

“No frills. Simple clean lines, solid neutral colors for all fabrics and dark furniture with colored accent pieces,” she adds.

Her go-to skincare brand

“I’m incredibly loyal to the brand VMV Hypoallergenics,” says Melissa. “Unfortunately they are no longer available in Singapore so I purchase a box of facial products every couple of months, and it’s more than worth it for the extra bit of hassle.”

Her favourite recent purchase

My skateboard! That was purchased from Longboard Love Board Shop.

What do you like most about living in SG?

“It really is an incredibly well run city that’s not only safe, stable, clean and corrupt-free. What I LOVE most is how the city is built around meritocracy and being accepting of all races and religion. You are what you do with your life, and I think that’s pretty damn awesome.”
