Love animals but your landlord won’t allow one at home? Don’t have time to commit to a pet but still want to spend time with animals? Or, just want to put your skills to work for a worthy cause? Here’s how and where you can volunteer with animals in Singapore.
Animal shelters in Singapore always need volunteers. You can volunteer more than just your time to care for animals. For example shelters are also looking for volunteers with media, public relations, fundraising, and event-organising skills, amongst other things. Get in touch at any of these places, and start making a difference!
1. Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter (OSCAS)
Lend a hand and save a paw! Join OSCAS‘s team of volunteers. The shelter, which houses dogs rescued from the streets or rescued from being culled, is managed almost entirely by volunteers. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available in areas such as Animal Welfare, Education and Outreach, PR and Media and Transport. You can register to be a volunteer via the OSACS website. Communication with first time volunteers will be conducted by email. Orientation sessions are scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis.

2. Causes for Animals (CAS)
This animal welfare charity was set up to support animal welfare in Singapore, and it works hand in hand with various organisations to help local community dogs and cats. Lend a hand with their publicity and events efforts, or help out at the CAS Adoption Centre. The organisation also offers a structured volunteer programme, designed for schools, companies, groups and departments. You can volunteer via the sign up form on the website.

3. Cat Welfare Society
Formed in 1999, the organisation develops strategies and programmes to stabilise and reduce the population of stray cats in Singapore, often by working closely with town councils and government bodies. They need volunteers to work with animals in Singaproe who can commit from medium to long-term periods as coordinators, community cat caregivers and mediators, or take up management roles.
4. Action For Singapore Dogs (ASD)
Established in December 2000, this not for profit organisation’s mission is to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs in Singapore and it has a strict no-kill policy. There are many ways to volunteer with animals here. You can work with dogs at its Adoption and Rescue Centre, help with logistics work or contribute behind the scenes in publicity, fund-raising and more.

5. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Singapore (SPCA)
Be an advocate for this well-known animal welfare organisation by volunteering as an individual or corporate team. Hands-on volunteering opportunities include cleaning animal enclosures and surrounding areas, and taking the rescued dogs out for their regular morning walk. They also need people to man the animal shelter office, and the SPCA merchandise shop.

6. Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD)
This volunteer-run organisation is dedicated to ensuring that Singapore’s many street dogs are well taken care of, and receive the love they deserve. If you want to volunteer with animals in Singapore, different volunteer teams are available in various different areas so do check out SOSD’s website to see what piques your interest. The organisation also offers internships.
Note: SOSD is currently looking for volunteers for Team Kennel, 9:30am – 12:30pm (Tues and Wed). Some of the duties involved for volunteers on this team include bringing shelter dogs out for activities, feeding dogs after exercise sessions, washing and cleaning the kennels and surrounding areas, housekeeping and reporting on health or behavioural concerns of dogs under observation.
