What’s The Ideal Teacher To Student Ratio For Preschools In Singapore?

Named after the popular Arthur Ransome novel, Swallows and Amazons focuses on emotional development in an enquiry-based early years programme.

Learning is through purposeful play and its teachers do not adopt a “lecture-style” approach. Instead, they create a learning environment for children explore and discover.

The school works within a ratio of one teacher for every five students; for students between 12 to 18 months, this ratio shrinks to 1:3.

The school aims to create an atmosphere that is familiar for parents, and one where each of the 65 children enrolled in the school has a sense of success and an achievable outcome every day.

Swallows and Amazons recently achieved the Singapore Pre-School Accreditation Framework Certifi cation (SPARK) for the second time. Other awards include: Singapore Excellence Award, Female Entrepreneur Award and the Luminary distinction in the Singapore Prestige Awards 2016-2017.

Here’s what won them these awards:

1. Putting the EQ in IQ: Students are given plenty of time and attention to learn and understand their emotions and the world around them.

2. Making learning fun: If children only do what they are told, then it becomes a “task.” Young children need lots of practice and patient encouragement in their learning, and having fun while working together is just as important as completing the task.

3. Creating confident learners: Children are taught to try new things with confidence, creativity and a “can do” attitude. Risk-taking is stimulating and rewarding, and teachers will adjust their learning challenges as their stamina increases.

What parents say

“The teachers are warm and kind, and Jackie Barkham, the school’s Principal, is fantastic. The staff all listen to the parents and take our concerns seriously. I know many schools where parents’ concerns are ignored. If they don’t even listen to the parent, then surely they wouldn’t listen to a small toddler. I know my son is being heard because I am being heard.”
