World Emoji Day falls on 17 July. Here are some fun activities you can do to celebrate this new-ish holiday!
A picture may be worth a thousand words but emojis can express a wide range of emotions with a singular icon. Originating from Japanese, emoji is a portmanteau of e and moji that literally translates to picture characters.
Today, emojis are so widely used that an entire universally agreed upon meaning has been established and used as a language of its own.
Here are 4 creative ways you can celebrate World Emoji Day from the comfort of your home!
1. Learn about emoji history
Over one-third of all the people online use emojis on the daily. Ever wonder how the little icons you so often came to be?
The emoji, as we know it, was created in 1999 by Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita’s original 176 emojis – now part of a permanent collection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art – was comprised of a group of 12 by 12 pixel images. These pixels primarily consisted of symbols meant to convey straightforward information.
Today, there are over 3000 emojis, with an estimated 5 billion of them being used every day!
2. Watch a movie
Pop in The Emoji Movie (2017) for family movie night and watch your most-used emojis come to life! The Emoji Movie is a computer-animated movie about the in-depth lives of emojis and what goes on inside your phones. It’s a family-friendly flick that’s the perfect watch for a light-hearted evening.
3. Try a DIY project
Grab a pair of scissors and get crafting! Express yourself artistically by trying your hand at some emoji crafts. These activities are easy enough for the kids to get involved as well and make their own emoji-themed notebooks, necklaces or pencil holders to celebrate World Emoji Day!
4. Make Emoji Themed Treats
Making emoji themed treats is a delicious and fun way to celebrate this special day! Start with either homemade or store-bought cookie dough and get creative with materials you probably already have at home.
Don’t have a cookie cutter? Use a coffee mug instead! Get creative: make basic circles for emoji faces, squares for landmarks and decorate your cookies with frosting of various colors.
Try making some other treats on World Emoji Day such as cupcakes decorated with emoji faces or a customizable pizza with a black olive smile and pepperoni heart eyes.
