An expat’s insider secrets
Born in Germany and raised in Seattle, Matthew White, the executive chef and partner of Alt. Pizza, the highly ranked, highly original pizzeria taking over Singapore, shares his favourite finds in Sunny Singapore.
To stay active
Matthew helps run and sponsor amateur triathlon team Arrivo Primo Singapura, and counts his pro race bike from Elite Bicycles Asia as a prize possession.
“We cycle all over Singapore, usually early in the morning when the temperature is cooler and the traffic is lighter.”
To watch sporting action
“I live right by the National Stadium, so I like checking out the concerts and sporting events like big swimming competitions at the OCBC Aquatic Centre,” says Matthew.
This month, the stadium hosted a Super Rugby game May 14. Check out the Sports Hub website for other event details.

To indulge in a great meal
Wolfgang Puck’s Marina Bay Sands steak joint CUT has a “cool bar to sit at and hobnob with friends,” says Matthew.
“The Smoke and Mirrors is amazing. It’s made with a single-malt whiskey, lapsang souchong and morlacca cherry.” (He had us at “single-malt”!)
To stay healthy
“I’m a bit of a health freak,” says Matthew, who considers Hawaiian restaurant Aloha Poké his ideal: “It’s fresh, healthy, super tasty and very affordable. I love the wasabi salmon poké bowl with brown rice and lots of veggies.”

To look stylish
“Since I’m constantly moving around my three restaurants, I need something cool and comfortable,” says single guy Matthew, who typically goes for dark, dry-fit shirts with jeans and Vans sneakers.
