Explore the sights of historic and royal Yogyakarta, in the centre of Indonesia.
The city of Yogyakarta in Central Java is most known for intricate, well-preserved 9th century temples that dot its landscape.
The famous temple, Borobudur, is not only a must-see attraction, but also a cultural sight for most tourists who visit annually. For more places of interest, check out these other ancient and modern sights, too.
Timang Beach
Head south to the coast to visit Timang Beach, a growing attraction among tourists who are looking for an adrenaline-fuelled ride. Perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking the swells below, many visit the beach to ride a gondola that was formerly used to ferry lobster fishermen to the rocky outcrop in the sea. Alternatively, the beach has multiple viewpoints that provide great backdrops for your photos, and the restaurants here serve delectable crustacean delights.

Plaosan Temple
A trip to Yogyakarta isn’t complete without a visit to a temple. Be sure to pay a visit to the Plaosan temple, located a kilometre away from the famous Prambanan temple. This 2,000-square-metre complex located 150 metres above sea level offers visitors a stunning view of its surrounding rice fields, and has detailed architectural features that are similar to the Borobudur temple.

Taman Sari Water Castle
This water palace was once the royal garden for the Sultan of Yogyakarta, and its magnificent façade still stands today – though the Sultan has since moved his premises to the Kraton, the palace and seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. Much of its allure and popularity as an attraction has been the bathing complex that was once used by princesses, with its underground tunnels and mosque on its grounds depicting the grandeur of the place at its prime.
